Remember 'V?' The show in the early 80's about alien lizard people who came to steal the Earth's water and harvest people as food? Yeah, I was 5 when the first miniseries came out in 1983. My mom watched 'V' and I was haunted by it for years. I had nightmares about the evil lizard-woman and the aliens' creepy ships. A few weeks ago, I found out ABC was doing a remake. Same basic story, different characters. This brought back vague memories of the original and how much it scared me. Yesterday I decided to face my demons. Isn't Youtube a wonderful thing? I watched the original miniseries as well as the 1984 miniseries and I'm on the second of nineteen episodes of the regular series that ran from 1984-1985, and I have one question: This is what gave me nightmares for years? Seriously? It's actually a good story (which surprised me since I'm not a big sci-fi fan) and the acting is pretty good by 80's standards. Most of the actors are people I recognize from other movies and shows (Robert Englund, aka Freddy Krueger, plays a good alien who helps the humans). The special effects aren't horribly cheesy for the most part, but there are a couple scenes that make you roll your eyes at how primitive they are (like when the aliens get vaporized by the lasers in the tunnel at the water plant). The only part that still freaked me out was the human-alien baby birth scene. The fake baby they use for the shot where the human-looking baby sticks out its forked tongue just looks evil, and then the lizard-baby is just beyond hideous. Other than that, 'V' isn't bad. I think I probably will finish watching all the episodes, and I'm actually considering watching the remake.
